If Vick really did it, why? What would induce a man with very serious money to grt involved in such a nasty enterprise?
Very serious money tends to make one think one is immune to the side effects of such nasty enterprises.

I think it is horrific, as I do any activity where we force animals to maim/kill each other for our entertainment.
Who says they're all "forced"? A lot of pitbulls are naturally aggressive and relish the chance to vanquish their enemies. Those dogs can have at it for all I care. Better than having them out on the streets mauling little kids.

Don't you get it? They are aggressive if not properly socialized, same as any dog. They get out and maul kids because dumbass owners think it is cool to have them.
Of course dogfighting is OK. Sometimes missles miss and then your fighter is too close to the enemy to get a missle lock so you have to close on him with guns. It's not like the idiot is going to just sit there and let you rip him apart with 20mm shells so he dodges and before you know it you've got a good old fashioned dogfight going. Honestly, I don't know why some people think that missles solve everything.
"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!
I find dog fighting repugnant and cruel. As someone who has raised and had numerous dogs as pets, I still however consider them animals, not "people". As such:
I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it.
Voltaire

I believe that applies in this case also.
The worst form of insubordination is being right - Keith D., marine veteran. A dictator will starve to the last civilian - self-quoted
And on the eigth day, God realized it was Monday, and created caffeine. And behold, it was very good. - self-quoted Klaatu: I'm impatient with stupidity. My people have learned to live without it.
Mr. Harley: I'm afraid my people haven't. I'm very sorry… I wish it were otherwise.
Dogfighting for fun and profit sucks. Not sure how Voltaire quote applies.
No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai
"I played it [Civilization] for three months and then realised I hadn't done any work. In the end, I had to delete all the saved files and smash the CD." Iain Banks, author

'I'm fairly certain that a ban on me punching you in the face is not a "right" worth respecting." - loinburger
Someone on ESPN radio...I forget who...mentioned that this is just a ridiculous double standard. It is all because so many people have an arbitrary attachment to dogs.

I can only conclude then that you're not very familiar with pitbulls. Just putting a pink bow on its head from birth won't "socialize" it to repress the bloodthirsty beast within.

You're right, just doing that wouldn't socialize a pitbull. Then again, that wouldn't socialize any other dog either. I wonder why people do it?

you guys may know I hate attack dogs and big dogs in general. I like medium sized dogs (though I know my dog could kill a child in theory).
Your average Newfoundland, St. Bernard, Mastiff or Great Dane is likely to be far more meek and laid back than your average Rottie. My family has owned seven Danes (they have unfortunately short lifespans, like most big dogs), and the only one known to attack people was the first, who had some sort of hormonal problem and was overprotective. Even so, he was far more aggressive towards other dogs than people. We had to put him to sleep after he killed the neighbors' chihuahua. The other ones were all incredibly gentle. When I was an infant, my mother discovered me pulling myself up by Tasha's jowls. The dog was in serious pain, but she just howled, didn't even think of biting me or shaking me off.
The fact of it is, big dogs don't really need to be aggressive. They're so gigantic they can squash anyone who messes with them, most of them know it, and so they know they don't have to prove anything. In my experience it's the really little dogs that are most aggressive, to compensate for the fact they can be eaten whole by any real dog. The aggression typically doesn't matter that much due to their utter impotence and lack of courage. They yap and snarl and then run away.

I've met pitbulls that were total sweethearts and then there were the two kept by some trailer trash that lived near my parents in New Mexico. They were raised to be aggressive and made my feel quite uncomfortable as they'd saunter into the street when I walked by. I never walked our dog on that street.
When I was a kid, fourth grade I think, I used to play with a Newfie that weighed about three times my 65-70 lbs. He'd let me "tackle" him by the neck, and then he'd wrap me with his forelegs and roll.
I didn't even know the owners, the dog lived on a street I walked on to get to a friend's house. They were later forced by some ordinance to put him in a fenced pen, and then I had to pet him through the fence.
I was just working at a house guarded by "Sambo," a 1yo Boerbull (ie, near 200 lb but still half puppy). One roofer was visited by his wife and 2yo daughter. She was a little intimidated by his size but was happy to pet him through the fence. He is a total sweetheart, unless he perceives his owner Phillip is in trouble.
A couple weeks ago, on the weekend when nobody else was there, some guys were mad at Phillip over the sale of a boat. Phillip said, "Sambo, need some help here. Got a baaad man!" Sambo charged from the porch and knocked the gate off its hinges. The guys jumped in their truck and left in a hurry, chased to the property line by Sambo. Phillip did say it took an hour or so for Sambo to "wind down" after that.
Note that Sambo had never been trained to do any of that, it's his nature to understand territoriality and protectiveness without being needlessly aggressive. Pitbulls aren't that different in temperament.

It worked for my aunt's bloodhound.

All I know is I met three pitbulls as a kid, and was bitten by each. That's all the evidence I need to know Michael Vick is a hero.
