Thanks, that's a good article. Still the rule is that suicide bombers are men. I think the explanation is linked to status and competition for mates, but like beserkers of old suicide bombers have a defect, an anomaly in their brains that allows them to take it too far. The trick of status building is to go as far as possible without getting banned killed.

Ah, fecundity, there's a word you don't see every day.

Anyone read Kim Stanley's Robinson's 40/50/60 series? In one of them... possibly 50 Degrees Below, one of the characters is reading an article (fictional, I presume) about how humans select mates - in the context of Monogamy (Polygamy was not discussed).

The crux is that men select mates based on fecundity - the number of children the mate will bear during her lifespan. Fecundity is more important than Fertility. This means the younger the better - even to the extent that a girl who is not yet fertile is valuable "prize" to claim due to very high fecundity.

Furthermore it is in the interest of the Male to be a Jailer - to not let any other Male near his mate. It is very much in the interest of the Male that all of his mate's offspring are his own, he does NOT want to be looking after the offspring of other men. In contrast the Female KNOWS that her offspring are her own - as such females do not need to "imprison" their mate in order to ensure the well-being of their offspring.

The article also covered the "Big and Strong" thing, suggesting that many Females prefer the men who lose fights - because the hyper-aggressive males are inevitably going to get injured in a fight, or just waste too much energy doing so, and thus not be able to properly provide. This explaining in part the sympathy that women have for men who are injured. It could probably be summarized, that Women prefer men with fighting spirit (ie will protect them), but who aren't mad (will go off looking for fights), the loser of a fight basically fits this criteria.

The funny thing was most every paragraph was appended with (is that true?) making it feel distinctly non-pretentious.

I consider that KSR has brilliant insight into human nature.
