  • Hueij, what do you think of the Cash song I posted earlier? Well, actually, its a Nick Cave cover, but its great song, IMO.

Serge Gainsbourg (with Jane Birkin) - Je t'aime... moi non plus

Serge Gainsbourg (with Brigitte Bardot) - Bonnie & Clyde

    Serge Gainsbourg - Melody

      Jane Birkin

That song was banned on Dutch radio way back then. But a smash hit at parties. It was my first year in high school and we asked our French teacher to translate it. She refused

Nostromo, I saw Nick Cave two years ago at the Lowlands festival and he played that song. He was the best act that year. But the moment Johnny Cash takes a song it's over. It is a Johnny Cash song. No one can beat the Man In Black.

BTW, Lowlands is in three weeks from now and NIN is performing. I hope they will play Hurt.
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
      Once again...

And I thought your country was the most open place on earth...

Here you go, I found one on the internet. Not a perfect translation, I know. French is the language of love, after all. And english the language of business

I love you I love you Oh yes I love you

        Nor do I

        Oh my love

        Like the wave Irresolute

I go I go and I come Inside you my love I go and I come Inside you my love And then I hold on

I love you I love you Oh Yes I love you

        Nor do I

You are the wave And I the naked island You go you go and you come you go and you come inside me my love and then we are one

I love you I love you Oh yes I love you Nor do I

        Oh my love

        Like the wave irresolute

I go i go and I come Inside you my love I go and I come Inside you my love And then I hold on

(orgasms--universal, i think, in any language)

I love I love you my love Inside me my love I love you my love Deep inside me my love And then we are one

I love you I love you Oh yes I love

        Nor do I

        Oh my love

Physical love is a dead end*

I go I go and I come Inside you my love I go and I come And I hold on

        Now...come

        (orgasms again)

*another translation says "physical love is without exit" I think Mick Harvey's translation is good, but it is still a bit rough. You should check out the song--Anita Lane and Nick Cave (from the Bad seeds--"red right hand")"

We are (well, we were ) but we are talking 1969 here. Je T'aime just came a few years too soon. just a couple of years later we were the first in the world to show naked breasts on national television. Phil Bloom

Too bad I can't post a pic of that historic event on Apo, even after 35 years

Edit: missed your edit. IIRC there should be a "between my tighs" in your translation somewhere

Don't know if it is that twisted. Murder ballads are around for a long time. it's not like Johnny Cash or Nick Cave invented them.

Lots of songs in there that I'm curious about...

                  • Whoah...

This thread made me listen to Cash and Cave again. But then it made me think back to the Nick Cave performance at Lowlands two years ago, so I looked up "Murder Ballads" on Wikipedia. I ended up on the page on Stagger Lee, my favourite Nick Cave murder ballad.

It seems I have some serious music searching to do.
