also for some reason I don't like lyrics for particular types of music. Namely classical and jazz. I hate jazz when a singer comes on. I just like them to jam out with music only.

Lyrics are important. They must not make for a good verse per se. Not at all. They may even be rather primitive but still great when within a song. They must just be organic to the melody. IMHO a rhyme is highly desirable. Also a rhythm: it seems to me unexcusable when two vowels fall on the same musical tone. As for whether it must make sense, I say the following. It must just not be an outright nonsense. Otherwise, it may be somewhat mysterious and unclear. I don't see a problem if different people understand it in a different way. It's art after all, not science.Freedom is just unawareness of being manipulated.

I like lyrics, but I suck at listening. I can converse in English just fine, I understand most anyone's normal English speech, but am simply unable to make out the lyrics of English songs most of the time. Fortunately the internet is full of lyrics sites so I can just take the song title or some passage that I am able to make out, and google up the lyrics. This is Shireroth, and Giant Squid will brutally murder me if I ever remove this link from my signature | In the end it won't be love that saves us, it will be mathematics | So many people have this concept of God the Avenger. Talk to me sometime.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

I listen to the lyrics, but I don't think they need to be deep or meaningful for a good song. A lot of artists use the voice as another instrument as part of their sonic piece and the lyrics don't necessarily matter. That's fine. In fact, I do like bands who use the voice as simply an instrument (The White Stripes [usually], Oasis, etc). But great lyrics can elevate songs (Green Day's "American Idiot" and "Holiday" come to mind).“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

songs without lyrics
Frank Sinatra. "dubbie, dubbi dooo....."
And the entire Jazz tradition of vocal improvisation.
Theres even word in Hebrew for a song without words, a "niggun" a very traditional form of musical expression.
OTOH, I very much like songs with good lyrics. Whether its Cole Porter or Teddy Hart, to John Lennon and Joan Baez and Bob Dylan and Mary Travers, or Bruce Springsteen. Ideally the lyrics and music work together."A person cannot approach the divine by reaching beyond the human. To become human, is what this individual person, has been created for.” Martin Buber

I listen to lyrics most of the time, but some artists are better without. Like Joe Satriani - he's much better when he's not singing. Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Ben Franklin
Iain Banks missed deadline due to Civ | The eyes are the groin of the head. - Dwight Schrute.
