Some here almost look back nostalically to the days of the IRA. On the whole, and with the odd exception, they didn't go in for indisciminate mass slaughter of civilians. They went for military and economic targets, and generally gave warnings. They were also fighting for something tangible - land, and with some coherent political basis behind it - uniting Ireland and ending foreign rule.

This current lot are just a bunch of nihilists who use any excuse, but are basically pissed off because they're not getting laid.

And thank the US for supporting the IRA for all these years. The US were playing the long game and new what was ultimately in the best interests of the UK.

They ended up going for economic targets on the mainland after having attempted to ruin the economies of Belfast, Derry and Ulster.

They did quite enjoy blowing up civilians but realized eventually that wasn't garnering them great sympathy around the world (except from the professionally aggrieved Irish diaspora):

1974: Birmingham pub blasts kill 19

Bombs have devastated two central Birmingham pubs, killing 19 people and injuring over 180.

Police have said they believe the Provisional IRA planted the devices in the Mulberry Bush and the nearby Tavern in the Town.

The explosions coincided with the return to Ireland of the body of James McDade, the IRA man who was killed in Coventry last week when the bomb he was planting blew up prematurely.

The two blasts were only seconds apart and happened at about 2030 GMT, when the bars were packed with mainly teenage drinkers.

Police attempted to clear both pubs, but the bombs went off only 12 minutes after a man with an Irish accent telephoned the Birmingham Post newspaper with a warning.

            Enniskillen:

1987: Bomb kills 11 at Enniskillen
A bomb has exploded during a Remembrance Day service at Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, killing 11 people.

It is the highest death toll in a terrorist attack in Northern Ireland for five years.

At least 63 people were injured in the blast, nine of them seriously.

The device went off without warning at 1045 GMT at the town's cenotaph where people had gathered to pay their respects to the war dead.

The bomb is believed to have been hidden in a nearby hall.

            Why the change ?

The IRA lost support worldwide after the bombing. On Remembrance Day 1997 the leader of the IRA's political wing, Gerry Adams, formally apologised for the bombing.
Pity the 'Real' IRA weren't singing from the same hymn book:

Main Events surrounding the bomb in Omagh
            Saturday 15 August 1998

Omagh Bomb - Largest loss of life in a single incident in Northern Ireland

At 3.10pm a car bomb exploded in Omagh, County Tyrone, killing 29 people (plus two unborn children) and injuring 220 others. 21 died where they fell while 8 more died on the way to, or in, hospital. Of those injured at least 11 were described as critical, including two children, and 113 were detained in hospital overnight.

The convictions of the 'Birmingham Six' were of course overturned, and the provos never claimed responsibility. A Republican I knew in Coventry with some scary connections insisted that the IRA were not behind it.

Is it true the bombs were intended to be detonated using cell phones? I wonder what service they were using.

The car 'bomb' at Glasgow airport sounds a bit half arsed to me.

Why do the terrorists mess up one thing after another? Not that I'm complaining of course, just wondering. Maybe it's the celebrity effect, you know, young people that get lots of media attention often are unable to cope with all the hype.

Considering Bush hasn't invaded Ireland yet, I'd say yes.
