I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

The new big thing on the web is all these sites with names like "I Hate France," with supposed datelines of French military history, supposedly proving how the French are total cowards...

Well, I'm going to tell you guys something you probably don't want to hear: these sites are total bull****, the notion that the French are cowards is total bull****, and anybody who knows anything about European military history knows damn well that over the past thousand years, the French have the most glorious military history in Europe, maybe the world.

France has a proud military tradition.

[I]n 1690 at Fleurus, the French infantry was subjected to some 'friendly fire' and thereafter it was decided that all regimental flags would have a white 'scarf' hanging from the top of the staff.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

New Zealand, OTOH, has no military tradition. You're the most embarassingly ****less member of the Commonwealth.
Which definitely explains why France decided to pick on New Zealand .

As long as we don't do something so bad that Australia will jump in to protect the honor of its little sister, we're untouchable.

We didn't "pick on" New Zealand. We were stopping Greenpeace from interfering with a French nuclear test. The Kiwis were just dumb enough to let Greenpeace use their country as a base, thinking France wouldn't dare mess with mighty NZ. You were wrong.

Damn straight. Aussies are as tough as Kiwis are weak.

Simple fact is one side had no business in the area except to harrass and hinder the work of the other. If you can think of one reason the Japanese would close the GP and purposely ram them instead of doing what would get them paid, please do tell.
Easy. You've got two parties, both convinced that they are morally right, and both determined to stand their ground. That results in what is effectively a game of chicken with big ships, both pushing to the edge.

I'm not buying the "purposely ram" angle. The damage is too slight for that. It's a nudge/scrape, not a ramming manoeuvre.

Except for the Japanese to stand their ground they just have to continue what they are doing which is slowly but surely cutting holes in the ocean.

For GP to stand their ground they have to purposefully interrupt the lawful work of another vessel by unnecessarily and purposefully closing them with no other purpose than to try and force them to maneuver by deliberately putting both in dangerous maneuvering situations (like not following Law of the Sea procedures).

And the damage is trivial, we don't know the speeds or more importantly the relative speeds during the collision. I have been in a collision at sea (I didn't have the deck, but I saw and felt the aftermath) and the damage wasn't catastrophic. Wouldn't suprise me if the GP only wanted to rub them, would be harder to spin if they killed people or otherwise seriously damaged the ship. Though if the cause requires it...

Again Laz, who had the motivation to put the ships in any situation that could result in this outcome? What reason would the GP even have to overtake the Japanese vessel in the first place? In unrestricted international waters you never close within 2 NAUTICAL MILES anyway. I always tried to make it a least four because the captain would get pissed if we passed closer, and if I could eight so Iwouldn't have to report the ship in the first place.

At the best GP is criminally incompetent, worst attempted murderers.

                          That's hysterical hyperbole.

Or continue pursuit of a moving target regardless of whether that involves cutting across the path of another vessel.

Perhaps you don't understand the concepts of overtaking and stand on/give way. Understandable, why would you?

Do you have anything else to add?
