Having overtaken thousands vessels of all types in both restricted costal and completely open international waters(such as this case, why was the GP anywhere near the Japanese ship?) I will tell you there close to no chance of things happening the way GP says.That might convince the pathologically-credulous, but smart chaps like you and I know that big ships have a lot of momentum and huge turning circles. That means it's entirely possible for an overtaking ship to be struck in the stern.
If I can avoid 20,000 ton supertankers with my 8,000 ton ship coming out of th Suez of in the Straights of Gibralter, the 949 ton Arctic Sunrise should have no problems.
The overtaking ship is the give way vessel, period. The Rules of the Road are clear.

So you think the Japenese sailed to the Arctic and purposely closed a GP vessel to within collision distance? For what purpose.
