  • So, watching Ice Road Truckers...

and wondering, couldn't they move all that cargo with helicopters or hovercraft? I'm not familiar with with either, but off the top of my head it seems reasonable. Maybe more expensive but they could move cargo year round, at least the lighter stuff.

That's the thing. It's cheaper and they really do need the trucks because they move so much heavy machinery.

The world record for hovercraft cargo is 305 tons (310 metric), though according to Wiki last year 330 tons was moved. I don't recall any of the weights moved during the first episode. And I do believe individual hovercraft of that size are fairly expensive. I think taken together, the costs of insurance, the cargo, the trucks, the prep work for and maintenance of the ice road, all of it is still cheaper than a handful of hovercraft that can only carry up to 330 tons. Like Harry said, I'm pretty sure the loads get well into the thousands of tons, if not the tens for the largest stuff.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

The Weighted Companion Cube is cheating on you, that slut.
