I have volunteered at the Special Olympics--for two years. It made me never want to do it again.
You know how some people quiver in fear over aging whenever they go to nursing homes? Or of illness when they go to hospitals?
You're talking to someone who sees the mind as being of primary importance over all other things--seeing people in a state lacking such cognitive faculties is horrifying and depressing.
This is the same reason why, if I ever contract an irreversible case of Alzheimers, I want to be put out of my misery. I don't care if I have the body of an Olympic athlete at the point--if I cannot think, I do not exist and therefore have no purpose, no meaning.
As far as them not knowing what failure is, I'm happy for them. I do. I won't deny that it's my problem, but such is life. If I had a lobotomy, I wouldn't know what failure, melancholia, pain, or even what euphoria is either.
Doesn't mean I want to live like that. I don't want my mind to be dulled--I don't want to be a dullard.
I'm sorry if I offended you. Maybe I should have made a crack about the Holocaust instead. Or maybe abortions--those are always funny.
