  • Jesus take the wheel: Sextuplets keep dying

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (AP) -- Half of the sextuplets born prematurely to a Minnesota couple have now died, while the others remained in critical condition, hospital officials said Saturday.

A third boy, Lincoln Sean Morrison, died Friday. Two of his brothers, Tryg and Bennet, died earlier in the week.

The four boys and two girls were born last Sunday about 4½ months early at a Minneapolis hospital. Doctors had advised the couple to selectively reduce the number of viable fetuses to two, but they declined.

Parents Ryan and Brianna Morrison released a statement saying it has been "a difficult week" for them, and they thanked everyone for their prayers and support.

"We continue to trust in the Lord and are hopeful for a good outcome for Cadence, Lucia and Sylas," the statement said.

Hospital officials said no further information would be released.

Doctors advised the couple to abort four of the fetuses so two could survive. The couple thought God would be on their side, so they kept 'em all...well, they tried to anyway.

If put in their position, Asher, I'd've done the same thing. Not for religious reasons (I'm not religious), but because I would not be able to pick which kid of mine to kill.

Brianna Morrison, 24, who used fertility drugs, gave birth just before midnight Sunday in Minneapolis
So, when you are trying to get pregnant it's about science, but when science then advices you on how to carry and deliver you ignore them? Sounds to me like God is the convienent scapegoat.

Asher, had they not used fertility drugs (something the church is against) it would not have happened..

Some of the fetuses were more viable than the others.

The church is also against condoms. No one listens to the church.

That's also not the point...the point is these people are stupid. They also happen to be religious, but I'm not saying those are correlated

They rely on science to get knocked up, then put their faith in "God" when problems arise.

Then they shouldnt use God as an excuse, unless they belong to some denomination which is against abortion, but tolerant regarding fertility treatments.

They're just your typical catholics, is all. They're religious when it's convenient (eg, no abortion!, homosexuals should not be married!, No divorces after the 6th divorce!, etc). They don't have true faith in god (otherwise why the need for fertility drugs), but when the decisions are hard but necessary they defer them to someone else (eg, God). Diffused responsibility...

What's the difference between aborting four and letting them die when born. At least they have a chance this way. It seems from the information that you have provided that the parents made the correct decision as they have only lost three this way.

Trusting in God may or may not be the issue here. They may have just wanted to give every opportunity for life.

It seems that you draw specific conclusions from limited data that fit your narrow viewpoints all the time. While I am not saying that you are wrong in this instance, I am saying that you have not provided enough information to narrow things down to the simple perspective that you are espousing.

A little openess to other points of view would be refreshing.

Because they would not be born this prematurely if they had aborted the fetuses like the doctors recommended. Now they're all going to die, or have lasting problems because of this.

You don't seem to understand that the reason they were born prematurely was because of having all of the fetuses. Using the two most viable gives them a far more real chance of being a properly developed human being.

You are the one ignoring the facts here.

I could post some interesting stuff on Jewish law and fertility drugs, and Jewish law and the dilemma of saving some babies out of a multiple pregnancy, but as Im sure none of you are interested in Judaism, I will return to the quest for kosher kimchee.

I fail to see any reference to this being a religious choice in the cited article. Just because someone "trusts in the Lord" during a difficult time does not imply that they make all their decisions based upon their religion.

This is the factless leap that I am refering to. Clearly the couple had a choice to make, but nowhere does the article state that they made it upon religious grounds.

You have zeroed in on their statement of using faith for comfort to draw an unsupportable conclusion. While your conclusion may or may not be correct, it cannot be validly stated with the evidence at hand.

This is what I was refering to.

Perhaps, instead of making factless leaps like this, you could consider doing some research.

"This is a serious medical complication [multiple births from fertility drugs] and predictably leads to extreme prematurity," suggested Dr. Richard J. Paulson of the USC Keck School of Medicine.

"It's one of the worse things that could happen to you," said the infertility specialist.

Others question why a woman in her early 20s who had been trying to get pregnant for about a year did not have other options, like trying longer.

Jenny Mashe, 32 and her husband Bryan, 29, used artificial insemination to conceive and were shocked when an ultrasound revealed she was carrying six fetuses.

Both the Morrisons and the Mashes were approached by their doctors about the option of "selective reduction" -- the aborting of all but one to three of the fetuses.

The intention is to increase the likelihood the remaining unborn children will survive, thrive and be delivered full term.

Both families declined, chosing to leave the outcome "in God's hands." The Morrisons are committed Christians who met at Bethany College of Missions and married in 2005.

I'm sure Jewish policy on multiple births is fascinating. Perhaps you can start a thread where you can have the children sit around the Torah and tell us all about it sometime.
