    Wounded beast? Makes it sound like theres only two players, the West and the regime. Theres a third player, the Iranian people.

    Learned from Iraq not to change regimes with the 3rd infantry division? Yes, indeedy.

    Not that our sanctions are an attempt at regime change, oh no. But it does seem that regime is reacting in ways that will make a change of regime more likely, rather than less.

      The changes that the government is instituting there will simply cause more discontent and drive people further in their desire to open up to the west. The problem is that any leadership or institutions for making such a move will be gone. It is entirely possible that they could maintain control over the people's desires indefinately without outside intervention. Clearly, this type of intervention needs to come from overt pressures on the regime and covert cooperation with encouraging any disident movements.
