  • Anybody knows about mkv files?

    And how to convert them?

I have a lot of files in the mkv format, but I need to convert them to avi for them to play in my dvd player

I have been searching the web for solutions, but nothing that works. The three applications I have found that was supposed to do the job are:

MKV to AVI Converter 3.0 - Some shareware that doesn't run at all
AVI-Mux GUI - A free application that can't convert the video file because the audio file is not in avi format..? Isn't that what the software was supposed to do? Convert both audio and video to an avi file?
VitualDubMod - Same as above... same problem as above
This space is empty... or is it?

By DVD player you mean a hardware DVD player or a software DVD player?

As SlowwHand said, that's a Matroska file. ffmpeg and mencoder should be able to deal with it.

Not really much to come after there as far as I can see. I see lots of apps to convert to mkv, but not the other way around

mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy fromfile.mkv -o tofile.avi

mencoder uses AVI as the output container format by default - if you want something different, use -of lavf to make it autodetect the output container format from the extension.

Can't recall how to use ffmpeg right now...

Yeah, it shouldn't take long since they're just container formats. You don't have to actually transcode the video.

mkv2ts is another tool that seems to get a lot of use.

FYI, many mkv files are h.264, so your DVD player will have to play h.264 for these files. I think the methods discussed above only change the container, not the codec.

                    Good luck.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Indeed. Try -ovc help to see what codecs your mencoder setup can transcode to. (-oac is for audio, -ovc for video)

                          Thanks for the help
