    Russian ninja arrested in Italy
    Christian Fraser
    BBC News, Rome

Italian police have arrested a Russian ninja who had been spreading fear across farmlands in the north of the country.

The man, camouflaged in an all black suit, had robbed several farmers and their families at knife point, police say.

Police had been searching for him for several weeks.

Ninjas were trained for stealth. They first appeared in 14th Century Japan and were famed as assassins and spies.

    Outwitted

For several weeks the police had been scouring the countryside looking for shadows.

The ninja was known to have struck several times - his head wrapped in a black bandana, a powerful bow in one hand and a knife strapped to his leg.

He targeted isolated farms late at night forcing farmers to hand over cash and valuables at arrow point.

His victims were usually so afraid they didn't report the attacks until some days later.

But on Monday night the ninja was outwitted.

As he smashed through the door of a farmhouse, a feisty old pensioner was waiting for him.

    Former soldier

The old man came down the stairs but tripped on the last step letting off his rifle.

Startled, the ninja made his escape, hopping onto a bicycle and racing off into the nearby cornfields - followed by police who were quickly on the scene.

Police eventually trailed him to an abandoned farmhouse where he was arrested.

He was later identified as Igor Vaclavic, a former soldier from the Russian army.

He was caught carrying night scopes and a head torch.

When asked about his chosen disguise, he told police he had been inspired by his boyhood idol - Robin Hood.

Robin Hood never ran away because an old man fell down, firing off his rifle.

Yeah but you never know. I figure the older the man, the more likely he is actually going to shoot. Less than 40? Might not shoot you at all, no matter what you do.

50? Will shot you if you don't obey. 55? Might shoot you anyway, even if you obey. 60 and over? They'll just shoot you for the heck of it, probably not asking for compliance to begin with.

And I think this is a fact too, if an old man pulls a gun on me and I'm in his house, I figure my only chance is if he misses.

And I don't even mind it really. I think every man has a right to defend himself, but even more so when it comes to older people. I mean they don't really have a fighting chance usually, so why should they risk and just gamble that the robbers aren't violent? And why should they take your stuff from your home ANYWAY? I fully support senior citiznes shooting robbers in the face and I'm glad to know that they're more trigger happy sometimes, or at least they don't freeze like the modern pussies do.

I think it's a fair deal, that if you enter someones house, you risk the chance of being shot. It's a killing field and if you want to enter that zone, don't come crying to me if grandpa blows up your face, I'm not going to feel sympathy, in fact I'll applaud and hope they get medals for the shooting.

FunFact: Ninja did not actually run around in black pajamas. If you're going to assassinate someone, it's best not to wear a designated assassin costume for the bodyguards to spot you in and kill you. Much like your average terrorist probably does not get on the plane with a long beard, burnoose, and scimitar. Hmm, man wrapped in black from head to toe, sneaking around and brandishing a knife? Nope, not at all suspicious...what a twit.

So a Russian grew up loving Robin Hood so he dressed as a ninja? Somewhere I think vodka played a significant role in this mans life.

Close. As we're now aware, he was a Russian who grew up loving Robin Hood, so he dressed as his perception of a ninja.

The story smells like a bullsh!t.

Vaclavic sounds like an abrakadabra for my Russian ear. It sounds more like a Balkan last name, but not Russian. On the other hand, Igor is a Russian name. So I think this whole story is just a fake.

You know, going off my last name I don't think I'm from America, not sure where I am from, but definitely not America. Going off my first name I'm English. Clearly my existence is being fabricated as we speak. Now all I need is a ninja outfit....
