Chinese vice premier dies; Hu could benefit
Huang Ju was 6th in party hierarchy; president gets to fill Politburo seat

    BREAKING NEWS

    Updated: 6 minutes ago

BEIJING - Vice Premier Huang Ju, a key ally of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin who climbed the ranks of Shanghai politics to join the Communist Party’s inner sanctum of power, died early Saturday, the official Xinhua News Agency said. He was 68.

Xinhua did not disclose the cause of death, though Huang had been ill, reportedly with pancreatic cancer, for more than a year. Xinhua said the Chinese leadership in its official obituary of Huang called him “a long-tested and faithful communist fighter” — a traditional description for a leader who dies in good standing.

Huang ranked No. 6 in the party hierarchy. His death creates a vacancy in the Politburo and gives President Hu Jintao an opportunity to increase his hold on power by filling it with a supporter.

In comparable systems, it means the death of a person between the vice preicdent and the precident - in democratic countries it doesn't mean anything.

I'm not. Everything I've ever heard about him makes him sound like a pretty bad person.

              (I'm ignoring the joke.)

68? I thought all Chinese leaders lived to 90?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I wonder if Hu prevented him from getting medical treatment like Mao did to Zhou.

What's the big deal? Does the position of Vice Premier in China have some measure of power?

Now Hu can have more people in power who support him. While there are no political parties in China, there are factions, usually rallied around a single leader rather than a cause (since the cause is usually the same, it's the power that they want).

Really? I don't know if I've heard this before, or I have and just forgot. Would you mind pointing me to link with this info, or a book?
