Most of the extremists are so dedicated to their cause that nothing will stop them. The point which people seem to be making is that unnecessary wars in places like Iraq turn lots of people who were formerly fence sitters into extremists. By ended such wars most of them will just go home and terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda will no longer enjoy record recruitments nor record funding. It's a flash point and by avoiding that flash point most of their support goes away and more reasonable people in the Arab world (and most of the terrorism is Arab though the general Muslim world does have a problem as well) goes away.
