It took Vietnam decades to recover. No one repeated their attempt to break away from the American world after that, even if countries like Nicaragua would attempt to renegotiate their place in it. Tactically, Vietnam was a defeat. Strategically, it was a victory.
The Iraq war still hasn't been lost, just so poorly managed that defeat is rather likely. Vietnam was a strategic victory. It bled the Soviet economy dry. Within 17 years after its end, USSR collapsed; within 20 years, Vietnam began adopting the very cause (capitalism) the war was about.
Today, Americans are more popular in Vietnam than in Europe, despite killing more than 3-4 millions Vietnamese just 20+ years ago.
