  • Triage is a method used in wartime or natural catastroph or limited capacity, and is not based on the definition of the need but on the life expectancy of the patient.
    Statistical anomaly.

It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

I understand the concept of triage, but cancer doesn't tend to wait nicely for doctors to get around to dealing with it.

Actually, yes it does. Many varieties of cancer are non time critical, and it's pretty well understood which ones are and which aren't.

There is always limited capacity. And it is based on both need and utility.

Capacity is limited even in circumstance when lifes are not at stake; then usual priorities apply, such as first in-first out.

              • Actually, FIFO does not always apply in Canada. In the already mentioned area of joint replacement, those in greater need are usually sent through faster.

By the way, it should be noted that as of yet the guidelines are not strictly set by government agencies. To a large extent hospitals and individual doctors set their own methodologies for distributing treatment. That's something I don't necessarily agree with...

                • We are all at a stage where the medical progress is so costly than all healthcare systems have financial limitations. But nobody dare informing the people that there will be necessary restrictions. Waiting lists are a visible form of restriction more acceptable than corporative or secret methodologies. Triage is acceptable under pressure of circumstances only.

                  • Care will always be limited in some way. Now it might mean a waiting list for procedures/care that is deemed unurgent. 100 years from now (assuming forward progress), it might mean a waiting list for cosmetic surgery.

                    • Given that health care costs increase faster than the growth of incomes, 100 years from now it would be better to assume that we will see waiting lists for broken ankles and layaway plans for blood transfusions.

                      • Something has to give there. At some point, we're going to be forced to deal with the underlying reason(s) for the dramatic increase in cost, in order to prevent that scenario you're talking about.

Lack of rational decision making on the part of consumers.

When we will recognize that the healthcare can no longer be socially and economically regulated by the cost, we will have to accept and implement a regulation by public health considerations.

                            • Loathe as I am to wade into this: no, they don't. French cuisine hasn't been the focus of culinary training for about 20 years or so.

French cooking techniques have been a major influence on virtually all Western cuisines, and almost all culinary schools use French cuisine as the basis for all other forms of western food.

Do you really think it's a "farce"? I kind of enjoy it; it's nice to have new positions to defend and people to hate.
