I understand the concept of triage, but cancer doesn't tend to wait nicely for doctors to get around to dealing with it.

Actually, FIFO does not always apply in Canada. In the already mentioned area of joint replacement, those in greater need are usually sent through faster.
By the way, it should be noted that as of yet the guidelines are not strictly set by government agencies. To a large extent hospitals and individual doctors set their own methodologies for distributing treatment. That's something I don't necessarily agree with...12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

We are all at a stage where the medical progress is so costly than all healthcare systems have financial limitations. But nobody dare informing the people that there will be necessary restrictions. Waiting lists are a visible form of restriction more acceptable than corporative or secret methodologies. Triage is acceptable under pressure of circumstances only.Statistical anomaly.

Care will always be limited in some way. Now it might mean a waiting list for procedures/care that is deemed unurgent. 100 years from now (assuming forward progress), it might mean a waiting list for cosmetic surgery.

Given that health care costs increase faster than the growth of incomes, 100 years from now it would be better to assume that we will see waiting lists for broken ankles and layaway plans for blood transfusions.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

Something has to give there. At some point, we're going to be forced to deal with the underlying reason(s) for the dramatic increase in cost, in order to prevent that scenario you're talking about.

Loathe as I am to wade into this: no, they don't. French cuisine hasn't been the focus of culinary training for about 20 years or so.
French cooking techniques have been a major influence on virtually all Western cuisines, and almost all culinary schools use French cuisine as the basis for all other forms of western food.
