I thought the correct wording would say, "A 23 year-old mother apparently hung her four small daughters and herself in a closet in their mobile home."

It's pretty straightforward, if her depression/psychosis was severe enough. With all the "normal" depression/psychosis, plus whatever sort of abuse/abandonment stuff that might be going on with the divorce from the sperm donor, she could well have felt that life was so painful and miserable and suck-ass bad that she was sparing her kids from prolonged misery. At the risk of stating the obvious, people who kill themselves often don't have their minds right, so their perception of reality is a little different from ours.

Take a good dose of general depression, prolonged high fatigue, post-partum hormones, a possible sense of helplessness of how the hell is she going to make it alone with four small kids, a possibility of abuse (especially verbal/emotional), the general nastiness of breakups, and who knows what else, and all sorts of things can happen.

A hanging is no sure bet. Most times yes, but, and I've made note of it a few times, I've been hung twice, and here I am.
