  • In his initial decision to go to war in Iraq, yes; to believe otherwise requires a Berzerker-like conspiratorial mindset that I simply don't have.
    ahem...

Let's be honest; Bush's real crime is that he made a mistake in deciding to wage a war of choice in Iraq.
you just said he waged a war of choice, not necessity. But he portrayed the war as necessary. That aint a mistake, its dishonest. And it doesn't take a conspiratorial mindset to understand that.

It doesn't make any sense for Bush to want to invade Iraq unless he really thought Saddam's regime posed a threat and needed to removed.
My God there's all sorts of possible reasons that have nothing to do with Saddam. We wanted to drain the swamp, invading Iraq and doing it so incompetently resulted in the chaos the terrorists needed to operate and we needed for the drain to work properly. Then there's our presence wrt Iran and Syria, both we'd gladly topple. Then of course there's the oil, now we have bases ringing the ME.

In fact, given the prevalence of that viewpoint in Washington and the media both before and during Bush's time in office, he was firmly in the majority in holding that view.
How many years were we told Saddam had WMD? Who was out there challenging that? Scott Ritter, Joe Wilson, both smeared by that epitome of sincerity in the White House and his cronies. The majority believed what it was told, hell, I believed what I was told. I just didn't care if Saddam had WMD. But all I had to believe Saddam had WMD were the repeated claims of the Bu****s and their media mouthpieces. Thats just another of Bush's lies - "everyone thought he had WMD". Oh really? The west knew what Saddam had, we had the receipts. So the weapons inspectors knew what Saddam had and they knew what they were destroying and that information was known by the various intel communities. At best Bush could claim Saddam had a fraction of what he once had, not vast stockpiles and that he had reconstituted WMD programs.

He certainly used spin to sell the war after he decided it was necessary, but I have little doubt the initial decision was a sincere one.
Yeah, he was honest until it was time to lie - to convince us with spin. Make up your mind, was it choice or necessity? Do you define honesty as lying half the time?
