We have evidence going back 7500 years of likely contacts between NE Americans and NW Europeans, the "Lost Red Paint People" (Nova) delved into the near identical maritime culture (fishing equipment, etc) found ringing the Atlantic. Of course that was during a 4,000 year warm period when sea levels had reached about their highest levels since the ice age (the Black Sea flood ~5500 ya), so I'll bet contacts go further back when sea levels were ~500 ft lower. People knew of each other before the ice melted and developed an advanced maritime culture to maintain contact.
