The three I know off the top of my head are:
    F. Scot Fitzgerald
Jim Henson (creator of the Muppets)
John Marshall (Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, 1801-1835)

One romantic pessimist; one gentle, whimsical artist; one hard-headed pragmatist who loved the Constitution: weirdly enough, that sums me up pretty well.

    After checking wiki, I'm happy to add;
    Phil Hartman
    Pedro Almadovar
Fats Navarro (the great jazz trumpeter)
Sir Arthur Guiness (as in Guiness Stout)

And from Poly: East Street Trader

But Dr. Seuss died on my birthday, which I also knew (it put a damper on my celebrating my 29th)

Colon should have the same birthday as Willy Wonka.

            Alan Turing
            June Carter Cash
            Clarence Thomas
Randy Jackson (of American Idol fame)
Joss Whedon (wow, didn't know that!)
            Zinedine Zidane
            Jason Mraz
LaDanian Tomlinson (w00t!) (and a couple of not as good NFLers)

Not too bad. A bunch of people further up the list I didn't recognize, like Ptolemy XV and a bunch of warlords and such.

Only Jonas Salk and Aaron Spelling died on the same day (of any interest). Amusing that Joss Whedon's birthday was the day Aaron Spelling died.

Also Midsummer's Eve to the various Germanic and Celtic pagan tribes that celebrate such

The only names I really cared about from Wiki:

                    Louis Armstrong - musician
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, The Queen Mother - grumpy old lady
Raoul Wallenberg - diplomat honored for saving Holocaust victims
Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani - old guy in Iraq
Richard Belzer - Munch from L&O SVU
                    Barack Obama - Some senator
                    Roger Clemens - some pitcher

As for famous events, the stand outs:

70 - The destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem by the Romans.
1735 - New York Weekly Journal writer John Peter Zenger is acquitted of seditious libel against the royal governor of New York, on the basis that what he published was true.
1914 - Germany invaded Belgium; in response, the United Kingdom declares war on Germany. The United States proclaims neutrality.
1964 - Civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney are found dead in Mississippi after disappearing on June 21.
United States destroyers USS Maddox and USS C. Turner Joy report coming attack in the Gulf of Tonkin. The destroyers open fire at what they believed were Vietnam People's Army torpedo boats, although subsequent work has raised doubts the targets were real. This engagement became known as the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

Giap was never a Viet Cong commander. During the war against the French he was in the Viet Minh, then during the war against the Americans he commanded all NVA forces. I suppose he technically commanded some elements of the VC during that time, but he was not principally in charge of irregular forces.

You and my wife have the same birthday.

By the way, you left out Ivan the Terrible. One would think that an Eastern Orthodox Christian would keep track of Russian Tsars...

too lazy to wade thru a long list to figure out who is noteworthy enough to post here.

most of the recent ones are a bunch of european footballers.
