Well, I was going for a more straight-up Rock and Roll feel, which biases the list towards white artists. If I were incorporating more R&B, Rap, and Pop, then the 1990s and 2000s would probably be majority black.

During a pretty long period in the 90s, there was a lot of mainstream black pop music (Mariah, who barely counts, but also Boyz II Men and that sort). While some call them R&B, they're essentially pop artists and were played on the pop stations.

Here's something maybe you know, maybe you don't.

In the 1940's, talent scouts were down south looking for Robert Johnson, who had been dead.. a few years. No one knows for sure when or how.
These talent scouts came across Muddy Waters and recorded The Plantation Recordings. Muddy sitting on the front porch.
They took him to Chicago where he, and Big Bill Broonzy, became known as the Father of Chicago Blues.

Zeppelin was supposed to be on there, but I can't find Stairway to Heaven (I swear I have it somewhere.)

It was originally the 1971 song, and American Pie was the original 1972 song. Once I find a copy of Stairway, I'll make those changes.

I allow some flexibility for song years. I can choose the year a song peaked in popularity, the year it was released as a single, or the year it was first released on an album. That's why American Pie could be either 71 or 72.

                            It's a good story... too bad it's false .

Alan Lomax, of the Library of Congress, was down South to record blues musicians... including Muddy Waters. After Waters, after Down on Stovall's Plantation went to Chicago to become professional musician.
