  • Indian Aggressor Visits Vancouver

So I'm taking a couple days off next month to visit the Canadian Rockies, and am hanging out in Vancouver for 3 days on my way back. What should I see? Where should I eat? Where to drink? Where to find teh hot Vancouver chicks?

Also, in which area of the city should I look for hotels? I'm currently looking at one "15 minutes from Stanley Park or Beach Ave," "close to shopping and the gay area." The price is right, what about the location?

That pretty much covers all of downtown Vancouver. Can you be more specific?

Well - I live a block off Davie.

You are in a pretty central spot. Five blocks to Robson and beyond that the downtown core such as it is.

Tourists hangouts: Stanley Park seawall, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Central Library, Art gallery, walking Robson Street, Olympic Countdown Clock on Georgia, Storyeum, Granville Island, a couple of revolving restaurants: one on Robson another on Hastings, Gastown including the steam clock, China Town, Little India, the beach at Kits or the nudie one at Wreck beach...

Cuisine in Vancouver is pretty international. Best place my father-in-law from Bangalore liked to eat when he visited: India Bistro on Robson Street. Naam is one of our fav eating spots but we are vegetarians. Vij's is nice but pricey, the place next door shares the same kitchen and the prices are better. Hon's on Robson is good for Chinese food, the Nikko or Mikko right next door serves up some of the best Japanese food.

The real heart of Vancouver is the outdoors. Heck, you can get mauled by a mountain lion and still be in North Vancouver city limits. Best way to experience the city is to hike up the Grouse Grind to Grouse (wimps can take the gondola up) hike to the Lions, Black Tusk, the Chief, the Squaw..

Don't know much about the single scene, but there is no shortage of women if you like doing sports. Hiking the Grouse Grind or hanging out at Kits beach might be a plan. I don't do the bar or club scene whatsoever.

I hope this helps some but feel free to ask questions.

Funniest tourist story I have recently: a group of tourists near Granville Island asked for directions to get to the ferry to "Victoria Island", so I asked them if they meant Granville Island. They talked a bunch and waved at their map and it gradually emerged that they wanted to go to Victoria on Vancouver Island. They had no concept of distance, they thought it would be a way to kill a couple hours.

Check out the Sylvia Hotel, well liked by the literary set and good location by English Bay. Also try the Sunset Inn. I haven't stayed there, but it is right in the area you're talking about.

NYT article about Alice Munro's Vancouver with reference to the Sylvia:
Alice Munro set a handful of her marvelous short stories in the damp British Columbian metropolis, and the urban geography is so exact you can practically map the city off her fictions.

For food, I always go to Sophie's Cafe on 4th and Arbutus. After walk down to Kits beach and over to Granville.

Hon's is okay, but quality has dropped.

Hit a White Spot, a traditional Vancouver burger join.

Salmon House in North Van is good.
              Golfing since 67

Depending on what you're looking for food wise, I'd recommend any or all of:

                Glowbal
                Lumiere
                Rain City Grill
                Cioppino's

For more casual fare with smoking hot hostesses/waitresses, try the Cactus Club on Broadway and Granville.

Most of the clubs are centred on Granville Street downtown, but you probably want to check out Yaletown for better bars/lounges. Lots of good restaurants there too (that's where Glowbal and Cioppino's are). Drinks at the Opus Bar in the Opus Hotel, George or the Yaletown Brewery are all good. The only problem with Yaletown right now is that they're in the process of building a new subway line through the area, so some of the streets are chewed up and blocked off. Still a must go to area, though.

On a nice afternoon, definitely check out the patio at Bridges Pub on Granville Island. Maybe the best northwest coast urban vibe around.

You could preview 'the hot chicks' on Wreck Beach.

Of course, you'd have to get your kit off too.

Stanley Park is lovely. The Anthropology Museum has some stunning Bill Reid art.

Forgot to mention that if you are going to the Banff area, stay in the Banff Springs or the Chateau Lake Louise. Both are expensive, but they're also among the top 10 hotels in the world. You only once, eh.

If you really can't afford them, stay at the Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, a great rustic place (if you do stay in Louise, let me know and I'll tell you some great walks.)

If you're in Banff in the morning, go to the breakfast/brunch buffet at the Banff Springs. It is absolutely amazing.

If you have access to camping gear, and you like to camp, go to Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park (just past Lake Louise). It's the best place to get the real rockies wilderness experience.
