  • Hey Yanks!

If we poor foreigners were to come to your country, which ten places would you think would offer a definitive snapshot of what makes up the identity of your nation?

E.g. Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, The White House, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas Strip, The Alamo, Golden Gate Bridge, Pearl Harbour etc...

And how many of them have you been to so far?
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Been to all but Pearl Harbour.
    I'll add Wrigley Field
    New Orleans
Kennedy space center during a launch

Been to Wrigley going to New Orleans next year.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I never thought that a nation's character is summed up in landmarks.

To REALLY get a feel for it you need to hide in stranger's houses and watch them from the wardrobe. Kinda like a safari park.

2.) Boston (Old North Church, Bunker Hill, Fenway Park)
          3.) Washington (Mall area, Smithsonian)
          4.) Philadelphia (Independence Hall)
5.) Great Smoky Mountains National Park
6.) Florida (Gold Coast, Disney World)
7.) Chicago (Sear's Tower, Wrigley Field, Pizza downtown)
8.) Arizona (Grand Canyon, Senora Desert)
9.) Texas (Go to a Texas bbq, Alamo, Riverwalk)
10.) California (Pacific Coast Highway, Golden Gate Bridge)

Hard to limit it to just ten places, things. So very much to see...

Well, I suppose you can chuck in a 'best of the rest' category if there are a couple of near run things. Or categorise by type, e.g. Natural Wonders, Architecture, Militaria etc...

            Whatever that is quintessentially 'US'...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

The birthplace of Leo Fender would be a worthy pilgrimage imo. Born near the city of Anaheim, California, I gather.

I am allways amused by your postings and really think you have times where you make sense..sometimes

I would have to say depends on the individual as to what is the best location to offer a snapshot of our nations....

                  But to some folks,

1)Border Crossing into Canada at Milltown Maine (Headed North)

2)Border Crossing into Canada at Calais Maine (Headed North)

(This way we get credit for exporting to Canada, depends on exchange rate whether we have to send 2 or 3 foreigners to get a full credit)

3)Ellis Island to show foreigners where all the ancestors came into early in our countries growth and what a privelege it is to have fine folks

                  4) Plymouth Rock Massachussetts where the "site" of our landing into this country, as we were the first foreigners

                  5) Kitty Hawk North Carolina, site of the Wright Brothers Historic Flight, precursor to Airlines which bring foreigners back and forth

                  6) Miami Florida where many Cuban Refugees were/are forced to live in harsh conditions but still better than under Castro rule

                  7) Brownsville Texas where many immigrants from Mexico come seeking a better way of life, even unto subjecting themselves to a possible death warrant, dieing in trucks crammed full of Mexicans escaping pitiful conditions to embrace a dream which we view as deplorable jobs and conditions, yet they continually want to live in the land of the free.

                  8) Statue of Liberty-New York City which stands as a monument to freemdom from tyranny as a gesture from the French many years ago. The French recognized the opportunities we extended to foreigners and yet we now often overlook or look down upon what some Americans view as "Less-than-acceptable" human beings

                  9) Manhattan Island-Shows how we as foreigners abused the locals and took advantage of a poor ignorant lot to position ourselves as leaders in this country.

                  10) Deep South-take foreigners down where we treated our own citizens with attrocities beyond fathomable dreams, and the kicker is our current heritage took as slaves these peoples ancestors.

Yes we as Americans have many sites to share, these are but a few.

Oh and I still have to show papers that I am permitted to work down here, see I am a Yankee and the true blue southerners get a little proud about their heritage and well, I calm them down when I tell them I am not a member of any occupying Union Forces, just an "Observer' to make sure Johhny Reb dont arm themselves against the one and true United States Government..

                  Ok

                  Thats my entry,

By the way some are in humor but most are sincere

There's no shortage of cool landmarks and cityscapes, but if you seriously want to get a feel for what makes up the national character of the US, you need to spend some time in smaller towns or more rural areas, particularly in the midwest or south.

Lots of places that offer a taste of America. The obvious are of course the major cities: New York, Boston, Philly, D.C., San Francisco, etc. But don't forget some of the more out of the way areas, like Gettysburg National Battlefield, where the pivotal battle of the American Civil War was fought, or Yellowstone National Park.

Yes... PLATO's list is good, excepting that it leaves out Kansas and Nebraska. I'd replace Philadelphia or Boston with a drive down I-40 from Kansas City to Denver (count it as two and drop both if you want). The Rockies (Denver) are a big part of it too, of course.
