Are Conservatives bat**** insane or is it just Albertans?

Bigfoot risks extinction, says Canadian MP
    Published: Wednesday May 2, 2007

Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

"The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

"Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot," says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.

Down through history, there have been numerous, if unsubstantiated sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch in North American folklore.

The beast is said to inhabit remote forests, mainly in the US Pacific northwest and western Canada, and many believe it could be related to the equally mythical Yeti said to have found its home in Tibet and Nepal.

While sometimes described as large, hairy bipedal hominoids, Bigfoot are considered by most experts to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

But the legend remains strong, and Bigfoot researcher Todd Standing, who was behind the petition, claims to have proof of its existence, and says he fears for its safety.

"When I get species protection for them nationwide, I will make my findings public and I will take this out of the realm of mythology. Bigfoot is real," Standing told Global National television news.

He said he has 12 seconds of video footage of Bigfoot roaming Canada's western Rocky Mountains included in a 30-minute documentary, but his detractors say it was staged with actors.

His supporters hail from Canada's westernmost provinces, but Bigfoot sightings have been reported across the country, which is 90 percent uninhabited.

There are currently 516 plant and animal species at risk in Canada, according to Environment Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct.

A commentator I heard said we should really be protecting leprochauns. One hundred years ago there were numerous sightings of these little beasties in packs of hundreds. When's the last time you heard of a leprochaun sighting? Obviously this group is in serious decline.

So does this guy's district get extra funds if he can officially get big foot listed as an endangered species? That might explain this stunt.

No problem-- I just had not seen it and I was wondering if it was "the onion" or something.

Not a big shock though that they get a 500 name petition-- I could get 500 people to sign a petition to ban water if I used the old chestnut of the "dangers of dihydrogen monoxide".

I wonder was this guy just kidding around or if it was part of some obligation they have to present petitions to parliament

Either way, it is a complete waste of parliament's time. I saw nothing that indicates he was not in support of the petition.

I agree its a waste of time but it probably wasted far less time than the Shane Doan hearings. Based on the time and effort expended there, ity appears that parliamentarians have lots of time to waste on bullcrap matters

The latter. He felt an obligation to present a properly assembled petition to Parliament.

                            Not on my Google list.

I did find lots of blogger comments with that search that were amusing though. They seem to imply he supported the position despite a press release of May 3rd which I have yet to find.....

Edmonton 's Conservative MP Mike Lake is distancing himself from the Bigfoot petition he presented to the HOC! His office has been in touch with Cryptomundo's Craig Woolheater:The press release [issued May 3rd] is the only statement that Mr. Lake will be making. He is not responding to any media requests in the hope that this issue will go away. Mr. Lake does not believe in Bigfoot!Meanwhile, abandoned by his erstwhile champion, a saddened Bigfoot marches dejectedly away from Edmonton.

edit: I found his press releasde. Strangely, it too was at a blog site. Mr. Lake's website does not post it.....

                            In the interest of fairness:

                            Statement

                            FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 03-MAY-2007

OTTAWA - Recently, there have been misleading stories from various media sources regarding a petition presented in the House of Commons to recognize Bigfoot as a protected species.

On March 28, 2007, Mike Lake, MP for Edmonton - Mill Woods - Beaumont tabled in the House of Commons a petition brought forward by one of his constituents. This constituent had collected signatures from a few hundred individuals, the vast majority of whom reside outside Mr. Lake’s constituency. The petition was deemed by the House of Commons’ Clerk of Petitions to be in order.

“I take seriously my responsibility to represent allof my constituents, regardless of whether or not I agree with their views. If a legitimate petition is brought forward by one of my constituents and deemed to be in order, I feel it is my duty to table it in the House.”

At no time did Mr. Lake speak in the House of Commons regarding the petition. At no point has Mr. Lake indicated his support for this petition.
