bah fix the link if it's not right...

Anyway a great blast from the 20th century past...China is playing a 'golden oldie'....goin' right back to Smilin' Joe, it's that chart-topper, the Forced Relocation of Hundreds of Thousands of People!

approx. 250 000 Tibetans forcibly relocated from their remote ancestral hamlets to 'socialist villages' where they can be controlled by the central government and 'civilized'.

And they're 'smiling and beaming' as they move into their Beautiful New 'Socialist Villages' (err...under the benevolent eye of Chinese security forces...villages that that have been forced to take out loans to pay for themselves, with many of them getting fleeced by corrupt officials...)

Don't you just envy them, being able re-inact some of the 20th centuries greatest moments? It's like Pioneer Village or something!

When can we get Socialist Villages? Are they like American suburbs? Any Eastern Europeans care to tell us how it 'rocks' in the forced relocation concentration of rural dwellers security area/village?

My next trip to China I want to visit a Socialist Village...too bad I won't be allowed to speak to the locals if they have been insufficiently intimidated! Oh well pictures are worth a thousand words.

They are more like reservations to separate the "undesireables" while making it look like the government gives a damn about them. Actually, the buildings are usually not bad. Certainly better than "mud huts." It's the same thing that they do to displaced farmers. Give them decent homes and some money and tell them to stay there. It's plainly obvious that they are ghettos in the making. Ironically, because poor city planning, they are occasionally placed right next to upper class neighborhoods separated by a wall and fence.
