math guys: how does one figure out a standard deviation

The average of 4 standard normal variables is its own random variable, and it's a different random variable from the average of 9 standard normal variables.

Then you use the formula for standard devation I gave: sqrt(n * p * (1 - p)). In the case of 15 dice at 3+, that's sqrt(15 * 2/3 * 1/3) = sqrt(10/3) ~= 1.8. So you're likely to get 8-12 successes.

You should mostly get 8-12 successes in your example, but what normal statistics can't tell you is that the freakish time you get 0 successes is on the most crucial set of rolls of the game 100% of the time.
