  • Top al-Qaeda leader captured

A top al Qaeda leader has been detained and captured, the Pentagon announced this morning.

Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi is described as al Qaeda's top operational planner in Afghanistan. He was also reportedly planning an assassination attempt on Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf.

Officials say he was responsible for several attempted assassinations, including previous attempts on the life of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and cross-border attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan. He has long-standing ties to the Taliban that go back to the 1990s and acted as a liaison between al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was captured by the CIA as he was attempting to travel back to his native country, Iraq. He was going to Iraq, officials say, to "manage" al Qaeda's operations, including plots on Western interests outside of Iraq.

He was captured by the CIA in late 2006 and held at a secret CIA detention facility until this week, when he was transferred to Gitmo and Department of Defense custody.

During his time with the CIA, Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was interrogated and revealed useful information about al Qaeda plots, which, officials say, have been disrupted as a result.

Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi had met with al Qaeda members in Iran, officials also said.

Hopefully the CIA can catch enough of these guys so that Iraq doesn't go completely to **** when the Yanks pull out...

Caught on his way back to Iraq, the CIA were kind enough to inform him that the Caribbean is so much nicer this time of year.

Really, most of these radicals, even the higher ranking ones, seem so amateurish, it's incredible to think they ever managed to actually pull anything off.

Looks like this one was an al-Qaeda diplomat of sorts being the chief liason between them and the Taliban.

                    So??

Ppl can be replaced. As long as they have Bin Laden's money and a willing pool of recruits, Al Qaeda is still as strong as ever.

I know it's good news, but it's hard for me to get enthusiastic about this

al qaeda? these guys are still around? Honestly, I don't care. What have they ever done to us? We have a war in Iraq to win. Terrorists aren't important right now.

It would be extremely difficult to fully replace someone with al-Iraqi's skills, reputation and experience.

No, Al Qaeda is not "as strong as ever". On the organizational level, they've been all but incapacitated as a fighting power, very little centralised control remains. All there is now is the name, the symbolism and the ideological beacon for individualised "cells" - unincorporated sympathizers, really - to take as their inspiration when attempting to stage onslaughts in their respective local areas. Of which intelligence agencies seem to keep pretty good track, at least in Western countries.

As far as large scale, centrally planned and -directed attacks by Al Qaeda, this party's over.

Isn't bin Laden dead? IIRC he didn't trot out arecent video last time they reported him dead so I think he must be not merely dead, but really most sincerely dead.

Listening to the news these days I get the impression that when a veiled woman farts it's an al-qaeda operative though.
