Electronic bulletin boards that have email, game module plugins, chat, downloads.

I thought the BBSs were great. Unfortunately, our house didn't have a separate phone line and I lived out in the middle of nowhere. Only 1 or 2 were available as a local call.

            2400 baud. C64.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Trade Wars -- best game ever, or bestest game ever?

Hmm...that reminds me, would anyone here be up for a game or TW?

Who started a BBS thread, punky?

I only tried Trade Wars a couple of times. I'm only familiar at the most basic of levels.

Isn't it fun when you realize you're actually aging...

They were text-based servers you could dial with a conventional modem.

                    Barren Realms Elite (my favorite)

a great way to get pirated games and other things that took way too long to download.

                      Sloww,

DanS, right, had the same problem. Plus, we had these prices, that if you called between after 5PM-7AM or so, the actual time wouldn't cost. I think I heard "GET OFF THE LINE!!!" quite often, because I'd be connected all that time and no one could make a call, or get through.

Well duh, we need another line! Well, didn't happen, until I got ISDN, but that was much much later...

Bulletin Board System. In the days before the net went main stream you'd use your modem to dial up local computers which were used as host systems and login to BBSes. They acted as forums and game centers but due to long distance telephone charges only local people would be found on BBSes except for in rare cases. It was what passed for the net before the real net was widely available and they were a lot of fun.

My mother used to yell at me because I was always tying up our only phone line using my C64 to dial up BBSes.

it's awesome how people would just keep calling and keep doing their thing even though they got yelled so loud and so often with all kinds of threats about taking away the computer, modem or what ever It was too interesting.
