300 Brinkley Students Walk Out Over Alleged Inequality

Hundreds of Brinkley students were not in their traditional classrooms Wednesday. Instead they were getting their lessons in a church.

Tim Harvey, a 10th grader, says “We did some math work and some essays like we normally do in math and English class."

Harvey is one of 300 students who skipped school. He says black students aren't being treated fairly.

"It's almost like a status thing. Certain students get different treatments,” he says.

Minorities make up 60 percent of the student body according to the district.

"Our staff doesn't reflect that. Our administration doesn't reflect that," says school board member Lovie Wofford.

Wofford says that's not fair. So she hopes a walkout during benchmark testing will send a message to the state.

"If we can get someone to hear us; we're struggling. We're suffering. Our children are not getting the best education that they can get," she says.

Rev. Oscar Conyears opened the doors of his church for the students who weren't in class. He says inequality in the district is being done on purpose.

"[There’s] a superintendent that is racist. He may not admit that, but being black all your life, you know when someone's being fair and someone is being unfair."

"I would think it's way out of line, yes," says Superintendent Randy Byrd.

Byrd says this whole situation isn't about students but instead something personal. The district recently cut jobs because of declining revenue.

"Some of the people that are pushing this are directly involved with people we have been forced to release. So yes, I think it's personal,” he says.

Byrd says the district has a person who works to recruit minority teachers, but he says there's not a lot to choose from.

"It's difficult to draw teachers to the Delta,” he says. “It's even more difficult to keep them here. We've made a concerted effort to increase those numbers."

In 2004, the district had about 21 percent minority teachers. Last year that number was up to just more than 24 percent. Byrd says even though that's an increase, it's still not as much as he'd like.

Many in the black community say that's an understatement.

"There's a need for black role models," says Conyears.

According to documents from the school district, Reverend Conyears wife, Gloria, is the coordinator of the minority recruitment plan. She is also the middle school principal, but the reverend says she'll be the dean of students next year which is not an administrative spot.

The students say they will stay out of class for the rest of the week.
Brinkley is a tiny municipality (~3,000 population) in the Delta, on the Interstate going towards Memphis. I don't know the total scoop about what's going on there, and I know this article is too sketchy on details for some of our skeptical minds, but the word I've heard personally is that yes the situation is pretty discriminatory.

The students boycotted again Thursday and probably today, Friday. This isn't a new idea for Delta schools; last year teachers in another district striked because a pay raise did not take place. Hopefully this superintendent can come to a peaceable agreement with his community leaders and these kids' test taking will not be affected.

      Get a grip.

Maybe there's an overall shortage of teachers. Why would a teacher in need overall, go there? What recommends it?
How many students have graduated from there, and gone on to become a teacher? If there were some, are they teaching in Brinkley? If not, why not?

Oh, that's right. It's the rednecks fault for all.

Isnt it more important that the teachers are good than their skin colour?

On the radio the other day the Administration was saying that the real reason for the walkout was the fact that they had elminated the vice superintendent position or a vice principle job. One of the two.

Hell, they have a special position in the district whose sole job is to recruit minority teachers but according to them there isn't a lot to choose from.

For the third day in a row, over 200 African-American students did not show up to class in the Brinkley School District.

A rift between the superintendent and a local reverend continues to grow there--that reverend has accused the superintendent of creating a spirit of racism in the district by cutting three black administrators.

The superintendent says the district is in the midst of a financial crisis, and he has been forced to cut black and white employees.

On Friday, students at the Partee Elementary School celebrated the end of benchmark testing.

Many African-American parents continue to send their children to school, and many of those students completed testing on Friday.

"I understand the issue of what they're saying," says parent Tammy Taylor, "I'm not going to agree or disagree, but I think the students should come first."

Taylor, who is African-American, has kept her third-grade child in the district. She says she wanted to see her daughter successfully complete the benchmark exams.

"I know everyone wants to make a stand," she said, "so I'm gonna stand up for my child's education."

Supposedly there is a trend to when the choice is available pick less qualified white applicants over experienced, degree holding black teachers. Also the white teachers send their children to a private school nearby, instead of entrusting them to Brinkley.

I haven't first hand witnessed anything; this is all supposed. I don't live there, but where there's smoke, there's usually some fire.

There are six administrative positions in the district, and the two held by blacks (and one held by a white guy) are being eliminated or demoted.

EDIT: Or what Sprayber posted. This came during a full news cycle so the reporters assigned to it are probably going to be sloppy, I had read in another article that two were black and one white. It's just as likely all three are black.
