  • List of documents you need while living on your own

After graduating college I will be in a position while I will need to personally handle all insurance, bills, whatever. So...I was wondering what documents I might need from home other than a birth certificate and shot records if there are any.

You should get a copy of your permanent record. You can get this if you write to your home town's bureau of records if you pass yourself off as an employer or a police department.

what do you need shot records for?

do apartment managers ask if you have your shots?

birth certificate, social security card, identification, passports, tax records (only if you think they'll audit you)

that's all you need really. oh, and money.

Birth Certificate is good, passport would work too. If you can get away with a copy of your Birtch Certificate that's even better.

Shot history would be good, your family doctor you've been seeing should be enough as whatever doc you go to should cross-ref. However, for a dentist they won't so if you can get your last complete set of x-rays that would be helpful.

Proof that you are elgible to work in the US is helpful too. Passport or Social Security Card.

Proof of insurance, health and auto.

Checkbook as well as bank statements.

uhm...? Put all of that in an envelope and send it to me, I'll look after it for you.

you mean the goverment is keeping records of us? Is that legal?

Yeah I know they have something if the police type your name in their computer. Mine should come up with no arrests or convictions. There's nothing to see there. But I always assumed I would not be in the system at all.

perhaps I'm being naive about this. I didn't think the goverment was allowed to keep records of everybody. I know the FBI had lots of records back in the commie scare days. Hoover liked to have a lot of dirty on lots of people. But that was far from everyone.

I had no idea something like that existed. I really don't see why I would have a permanent record. What's on it...two speeding tickets?

Shot history is kinda more because I am in the military and all. I presume with the dentist I can just keep a business card from my old dentist and they can just fax any new information. I just got my wisdom teeth out a month ago so I'll need new xrays next time I will go anyway.

Social Security card is a given. I have that at school with me but in a different place than I keep all other forms of identification.

Never had a passport actually. I don't even know how to get one.

yeah I don't have a passport either. It's good to have. Eventually I want to get one because I want to see europe. I didn't need one in the military.

I heard to get a drivers license in my state now, you need like 3 forms if ID. . I guess this is because of the national security terrorism thing. Or maybe it's a thing against illegal immigrants. I don't have that many forms of id. who in the hell does?

As for insurance, all you really need is your insurance card to show you have proof of insurance. This goes for car and personal.

Yeah, I keep the insurance card in my car. I double that as registration too.

OK I'll be good. Gawd I can't believe you guys fell for that. The "permanent record" was first mentioned in an episode of Leave It To Beaver in the 1950s. The idea was subsequently picked up by Dobbie Gillis and I Love Lucy. It was briefly revived in the 1970s by Happy Days.
