On this date in 1844, Edgar Allan Poe published a story in the New York Sun, reporting on a 3-day flight across the Atlantic in a flying machine by one Monck Mason.
Poe reported that Mason left Penstruthal, North Wales on April 6 and arrived 75 hours later at Sulllivan's Island near Charleston, South Carolina. Poe previded detailed descriptions of the preparation and in-flight observations of Mason.
Great excitement was generated by this story.
And on yeah...it was a foreshadowing of Orson Well's War of the Worlds because it wasn't true.
