China: Valid IDs to Limit Time Youths Play Online
    By REUTERS
Internet game operators in China must deter young people from playing online more than three hours a day to combat what the government regards as online addiction, according to a circular issued by eight government departments, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Public Security. Game companies must develop a system that cancels half a minor’s earned gaming credits if he remains online for more than three hours a day. If the young person plays for more than five hours a day, all of that player’s credits will be taken away. Online gamers will also be required to register using their real names and identity card numbers, which will indicate if they are under the age of 18. Companies must develop an anti-addiction system by June 15, fully test it by July 15 and implement it thereafter, according to the circular.
Their virtual economy, that is. Although this will affect those who actually make money by farming for other people.

What do you think the result of this will be on online gaming?

Also, do you think these actions are an effective way of combating a perceived social addiction?

They have to play it careful, or they will have a revolution to deal with.

A system like this could be attractive for most of the gamers. They would be able to compete by playing smarter instead of just sinking more time into it.

I've avoided MMORPG mostly because I don't want to compete against kids spending 16 hours a day leveling up or feel pressured to keep up with insane friends who likewise sink absurd amounts of time into the games.

you can't grind smarter though, they probably are already at the point where they can say they are spending a minimal amount of effort for a maximum amount of return.

In that case the time limits would give the developers the liberty to accelerate the pace of the game without the danger that 24/7 players would exhaust all of the content too fast to hold the interest of the gamers.

I play an MMORPG. My son got me into it. I've got another friend who is an adult who has steadily increased his playing time. He's sometimes literally on for multiple days straight without sleep. He has to have started using meth just to play more.

While this could benefit quality in some ways, realistically it will just piss off gamers. Still, if this gets rid of the Chinese gold farmers, I'm all for it.

I thought this was going to be a discussion of the vast number of non-performing loans held by Chinese banks...

I and a freind have played MMOs multiple days slow. It is stupid and dangerous, but we didn't use any meth to do so.

                              I agree.
For example in Wow, I saw very few people explain properly why exactly gold farmers are a net negative.
In general, it keeps prices down, which is both good and bad depending what side of the market you are mostly on.
It's usually just something that focuses the complaint of people.
