  • Oh No!!! A Meteor Is Coming To Kill Us All!!

    BOOM!

    The dust settles...

....and 95% of all life on earth disappears.

    Which would take over iyo?

I vote for insects just because of the speed at which they multiply and how they adapt to almost anything.

For the first couple centuries until the dust settles, the fungi would pwn all. Growing in the dark on the plentiful source of food represented by the dead meat of 95% of earth's former life.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Species not as in plants, as in what I named in the poll.

                  Fungi aren't plants.

Insects will always be present, but never the largest. Their physiology just doesn't scale well. I'd say it's a toss up between mammels and birds, both are highly adaptable, scalable, fast and intelligent.

This, of course, assumes humans die off.

Insects, of course. Look at cockroaches.

Yeah, they's tiny! Insects will be around, and they will always have vast vast vast numbers, but they will never be the big land animals.
