In all reality how many defacto ID cards do you carry around with you? Social Security Card, Drivers Lincence, Medical Issurance, Auto Insurance, Credit Cards, Bank Card, Library Card, Blockbuster Card?

What is the harm of having a truely secure/modern ID? Especially if the consolidate the funcions of four or five other cards I already have in my wallet. There is no logical reason to be against this. Especially in Britain where they already have telescreens.

There are many logical reasons to be against this and it's depressing if you can't come up with a single one.

It is depressing that you can't see past the stupid big brother paranoia that hinders an idea that can only have positive results. And which will happen eventually everywhere anyways.

The only valid arguement anyone has brought up is cost, and that all depends on your opinion on cost/benefit analysis.

And I forgot to mention passports earlier.

The UK used to have ID cards, they were abolished due to, in part, public resentment towards them.

With the exception of my passport, I have no photographic ID.

Thus none of them act as proof of my identity.

Plus the holograms/forge markings require one of the actual machines to make correctly, which are all controled.

And that is just to copy one, to create a new one you would have to enter an account on the other side of the government system. Plus all the card numbers are cataloged anyways.

And if I heard right these will have fingerpirnt and retina data? Good luck forging those. I for one would be all about someone having a fingerprint/retina scan before using, say, my stolen credit card. Or picking my child up form daycare. Buying firearms/explosives. Entering a military facility.
How many everyday Brits do you think buy firearms or explosives, or enters military facilities? If you were picking your kids from day care do you think that the carers might just instead employ the simple check of knowing who you are by experience rather than asking for a retina scan?

The privacy issue is stupid anyways, your credit card transactions are a far better way to track someone than an ID card (since how many places actually check your ID before you use your credit card, lazy ****ers).
That reinforces the point that the ID cards for tracking purposes are a waste of money. Add to that, for these cards to be useful in the consolidated form you mention a person will need to be asked to present them just to rent a library book. This seems ridiculous. Even then, consider the 7/7 bombings in London. Please, someone, explain how the ID cards, if implemented as planned, would have done anything to prevent the attack.

                        I don't.

If I pay by card I use a pin number.

What point is there in driver's license if it dosn't carry photo? You could use that of your brother easily!

The new ones do. If you notified the DVLA of a change in address they would have issued a new one with photo ID.

Mine was issued 10 years ago and is just a pink piece of paper. I don't recall when the change occured.
