  • U.S. taxes- phone tax credit

Can I take this credit even if I haven't had long distance service? I heard having a cell phone counts. I believe I have had a cell phone since 2003 (I currently do not have one). I'm not sure if I paid that excise tax or whatever it was call. I don't have any of my old statements.

Should I take this $30 credit? I don't want to get in trouble. But I am unemployed, and could use the $30. . As it is, I have to pay $209 for my taxes this year without the credit.

I took this credit when I filled my taxes two months ago.

I just like to be honest. I'm not sure if I can take it or not. I'm afraid they will check and realize I never had long distance service on my LAN line. But I did have a cell phone a few years ago. I'm not sure if that counts.

I'm preparing taxes and if the client gives us a phone number we give them the credit without asking any questions.
