      • BUT on topic. I agree with Narz. Globalization never will do anything than make the rich countries richer and keeping the poor countries poor .

When the rich countries drop their protective taxes instead of forcing poor countries to drop theirs and keeping their own ones. Then maybe globalization will work. Every country needs to protect and build up their own economy until it is ready to face the free market.

        Globalization IMHO

          • I would'nt really classify them as "poor" countries. Plus they built up their economy and protected their local companies with protective tariffs before they opened up to globalization.

They're less poor now, but they'd still be desperately poor if globalization hadn't provided a friendly environment for their economic growth.

                • Yea I agree with that. What I m saying is that the poorest countries (most of the african countries and some others) should be allowed to have protective tariffs to build up their own local companies so they will be ready for global competition. That's what India and China did and it worked for them.

                  • Africa needs less tariffs and subsidies on the part of Europe, Japan and America, not more tariffs and subsidies of their own. Africa is suffering because global free trade hasn't advanced far enough...

                    • Yup, thats a huge part of the problem.
But lets face it, Europe, Japan and America are not going to change the system that keeps them on top are they
So the developing countries have to have tariffs and subsidies of their own. But the IMF and WB wont let them do that. Why? Because they are controlled by Europe, Japan and America. To change anything in that you need 85% agreement. The USA have 17% of the votes. So they can veto any resolution even if every country in the world votes for it.

                      Its a lovely system innit..

                      EDIT:Corrected some typos

That the idiots in the film attempt to claim that capitalism wants people to be poor (so that they can exploit them) is also rubbish. This is just a bunch of communist rhetoric and opinions without any facts or reasoned argumentation to back up their (rather stupid) positions.
In a sense, globalization has a tendency towards equalization of conditions that goes much beyond wages — it's also a statement on what is civilization, what should be your lifestyle, etc.

That's why most people outside of America oppose merchandisation of education and culture. It's a stretch to assume that pro-globalization folks are racist (or, to be more precise, that there are more racists in their ranks than in others'), but if you look at the background, you can understand why some may feel culturally alienated and extend the feeling in an accusation of racism.

It has nothing to do with "staying on top". If that were the case, the developed world would never have pushed for free trade in the first place. The reason the expansion of global free trade has stopped where it has is local political concerns, not some desire to stick it to the Third World...

                          • How does it not have anything to do with staying on top? Lets just take agriculture subsidies and protective tariffs for example. If France and the US dropped their tariffs and subsidies (just taking those as example since they are the ones who I know relatively the most about, which isnt saying much). A lot of their farmers would go bankrupt because producing costs are a lot lower in countries with lower wages.

This is the case with Iceland as well. If we dropped our tariffs the icelandic agriculture would be wiped out. Because everything is much more expensive to produce than countries with lower avarage wages etc.

So globalization is a pretty idea, just like communism, but it doesnt work properly.
