              • LG reverses course and will sell a player that can play both HD DVD and Blu…

The solution for the guy who wants to be on the cutting edge of High Definition but who doesn't know which format will eventually end up on top maybe to by a hybrid player which plays both. LG Electronics of Korea is the first to market with a hybrid player and Samsung Electronics, also of Korea, is actively considering releasing one but say they'll only do it if HD DVD sales equal Blu Ray.

It seems many of the big electronics companies think Blu Ray will eventually win the standards war so we maybe in for an extended fight. To put this in perspective it wasn't until 2006 that DVD player sales over took VCR sales so the standards fight could go on for another decade.

                • CNET is recommending no one buy either player until the standards war is over or at least until it becomes clear who the leader is.

                  • Hell, I think I'll just keep downloading high definition movies off of the net and playing them on my computer. It's the cheapest option.

                    • It seems Blu Ray disks are outselling HD DVD Disks nearly 2 to 1 right now though the market penitration rate is still very low. PS3 sales seem to be drivng much of Blu Ray's success since it's the only way to get a Blu Ray player under $500.

The LG player isn't a real HD DVD player. It doesn't support the full spec, and thus isn't certified.

Last time I checked, standalone players were something like 5:1 in HD DVD's favour. With the PS3's sales slowing dramatically, and even cheaper HD DVD players coming out (you can get a Toshiba HD DVD for $299 this weekend), that trend will probably reverse.

Not to mention that Bluray's specs are still waffling. The reason why The Matrix Trilogy (which is supposed to be AWESOME, spec-wise) is coming out on HD DVD long before Bluray is Bluray still can't settle on their interactivity standards.

                          • I guess Ken Kuratagi WAS right. Since Sony made the PS3 so inexpensive, people must think they are too cheap and aren't buying them.

Yeah, where it was revealed that AAHZ is a twit.

EDIT: had a typo, "a" and "i" are right next to each other on my keyboard.

Re: HD-DVD/Blu-Ray... meh. I'm still trying to complete my regular DVD collection, and the DRM stuff irks me.

                              Downloads it is, Oerdin!
