As a compiler nerd, I was (previously) excited about the PS3 and all of the innovations it would bring to heterogenous computing, but seeing as how it hasn't brought any innovations to heterogenous computing I'm now willing to dismiss it as a dismal failure. "So, y'see, we've got this single unconstrained processor and N constrained processors, and if all goes well then joy ensues!" "Huzzah, so, you've got the compiler taking care of the N constrained processors, right?" "Well, no, that's the programmer's job." "Oh. Well, then you've at least got the domain-specific programming languages for the hybrid processor setup, right?" "Well, no, we're expecting the programmer to heroically utilize all of the resources were giving them, no matter how unforgiving we make those resources." "What the **** were you thinking???" "We weren't."

I think they were thinking: "We want the PS3 to be a supercomputer, because that's awesome. The Cell is designed for supercomputers. Whee!"
I don't think anybody was thinking "we're going to take Cell processors and use them for supercomputing" in the same way that they might be thinking "we're going to take GPU's and use them for supercomputing." Rather, they were hoping that Cell would offer new idea to (or at least justify the idea of) heterogenous supercomputing, and in this regard it has failed even worse than the PS3.Last edited by loinburger; March 27, 2007, 22:10.<p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures </p>

Geez, Laurentius, you're like Asher's dim-witted little brother, who roots for the other team just to annoy big bro...the very article you posted noted that Microsoft and Nintendo did not supply enough units. So quality has very little to do with it. More people buy Big Macs than filet mignon or lobster, but not because Big Macs are better. Nah, that's a bad example; Big Macs are super-cheap and omnipresent, whereas the PS3 is ludicrously expensive and omnipresent.

For the following reasons:
1) The 360 will have more games than the PS3
2) The 360 has a larger existing userbase who are game-purchasing happy, meaning more future titles keep jumping ship to the 360 (GTA, DMC, FF XIII exclusivity is up in the air now even)
3) The 360 will always be cheaper than the Ps3
1. The 360 doesnt have that many more games. Besides who wants to buy old 360 games anyway? PS3 will have Bluray movies, a huge benefit to the PS3.
2. The PS2 fanbase is many times larger than the Zbox will ever be. You also have to remember that not all people buy PS3 as purely a games console. People buy it as a Bluray player with extended capabilities. Some people buy it as stylish and affordable computer to run Linux on it.
3. It always has.Que l’Univers n’est qu’un défaut dans la pureté de Non-être.

HA HA I HATE MICRO$OFT (see what I did there?) AND SO I PREFER THE PS3 OVER THE XBOX 360 FOR NO GOOD REASON. Ha ha, I hate micro$$$$$oft too, and boy howdy does the PS3 beat the tar out of the XBOX 360 on some theoretical level (e.g., if the people making games for the PS3 had proper compiler/language support for their bizarro hybrid processor), and I encourage all micro$$$$$$$$$$$$oft-loathing Sony-loving morons to buy a PS3 just to sleight Micro$haft (see what I did there) (and by the way, since when has Sony become the symbol of Free Enterprise that will counter the evils of Microsoft (I've lost my fondness of dollar signs)) so that they'll starve to death as a result of wasting their money on a useless Blu-Ray player, but have I ever mentioned how laurentius is one of the stupidest posters on Apolyton? Because he is. Really. Ned has his goofy-ass conspiracy theories about goofy-ass Nedisms that in some way or another might destroy the world were they to come true, but even if all of laurentius's idiocies were to come true he's still be a moron.<p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures </p>
