  • Greatness of MMOs

I have come to realise that there are a large number of people with disabilities, either social, mental, or physical, who play MMOs (WOW right now). This seems to me to be a great step forward... really, and that video games are at the heart of.

People who have problems fitting into normal society because of their disabilities can play MMOs and be part of a soceity. They can have people to talk to, to do things with, to share failures with and successes with... which might be difficult for thme to do in RL. And at most people will just think that they are a noob or a kid. Additionally, it is controlled, and if they have to rest or can't handle more, etc, they can just log off...

I know that chatrooms, email lists, and forums like this one provided the first steps in this direction. They provided a means to communicate without being there... in person. (and I know that phones exist... but I have no problem talking in person and don't talk well on phones generally) However, these things didn't provide something to do together, or a way to have successes and failures. A big draw of MMOs is that they are very easy... you spend your time and you get rewarded... you can do this over and over again, getting nicer and nicer rewards, and it is all easier than RL... (this is, I think, a reason why many play, even those who wouldn't be considered to have social, mental, or physical problems)

Anyways.. I could write more. And I definitely should try to communicate better (but I already need to be writing my Scholarly Paper, and so would rather not spend the effort here). But what do you think?

well i AM someone with a mental disability and i totally agree with you, Jon Miller

though i dont participate in MMO's, 'Poly is (as ive stated many times over) my home... It gives me a place to "fit in" and "be recognized" where i might struggle or go down a wrong path otherwise. I fully understand that even though i am 29 years old, i still have a lot of growing up to do... and have a lot to learn. 'Poly has been a Godsend for me, and I DEEPLY thank all of you.

But what if playing MMOs causes your social skills to atrophy?

Well, that can be an issue also. The problems of MMOs are known and many. I was coming up with an advantage, which I don't think people commonly think about.

Why would someone lie about not owning a computer - in an internet forum, no less? It's amazing how paranoid / untrusting some people can be.

I think that was more offensive than deffensive.

Yeah, I know that MMOs can be abused. I am not refering to that.

You've got a ways to go with your whole computer-addiction thing.

I agree with the OP. MMOs give a social outlet for those who don't fit in as well in general society. These games have a large population of "normal" people too, so disabled people for example aren't restricted to socialising with other disabled people as would be more likely IRL.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

well, this might be incredibly hard to believe... but PH was one of the first people in the OTF to treat me with respect and welcome me back from my LONG absence... (besides you, Pekka, and a lot of others...)

Aside from MMO's, forums like 'Poly give some measure of sanity and stability to an otherwise crazy life for disabled people...
