That's because Democratic volunteers believe in their cause.

Working for the dark side has always paid better.

Well, Republicans who believe in their cause couldn't be working for free, now could they?

So long as a normal diet does not consist entirely of poisonous dog food from China, some sustenance is required in the form of cold hard cash.

That the Dems give only unpaid internships is an indication of the support in the society that they garner (i.e., not much).

Trust fund babies (you know who you are) are the only ones who can afford to work for the Dems.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

had to pay real money for that poisonous dog food from China. Us Chinese don't give away anything!

I assume it would be pretty cheap now. Well within the range of panhandlers and other Dem volunteers.

The irony of the populist sentiments (gotta get me some of that guvmint monies) as the base of Democratic vote obviously eludes you.
