What electricity consuming stuff does he need to do his job?

A computer with all the peripherals? Two? A TV set? A photocopying machine? A special study room or two, which require more heating and/or cooling?

You don't get to 20x normal consumption this way, not without heating your pool or something along those lines.

If the electricity is generated by sources that do not produce elevated levels of CO2 or methane then there is no issue.

In Britain we can choose to purchase our electricity from renewable sources only, Gore should do the same.

Where Gore is naughty is all those flights.

I can't help but wonder if Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee has signed his own “Personal Energy Ethics Pledge.”

This is another classic example of the Karl-Rove politics: concocted a smear of an opponent in the area in which he is strongest.

Do Republicans ever have anything to say on issues...or can they just throw mud??

They ran out of meaningful ideas a long time ago. The mud slinging just makes them look bad though I do think Gore could do more to conserve. The net effect is nil if he really is buying good carbon off sets but it would be a nice symbolic gesture. I suppose he could just not heat his pool but the big carbon output is really the private jet he uses to fly himself and the other members of his slide show team around to the various conferences where he gives his speech/show.

There really is no way to reduce the carbon output from that unless he just stops doing the show, which is what James "I hate fags and my family is 100% *** free" Imhofe really wants. The only way Gore really can continue with his advocacy is to fly and then buy carbon off sets to insure he isn't adding to the problem.

I don't know what buying a carbon off set means, but it's the stupidest concept I've heard of in a long time.

It's grim when I have to agree with Dinodoc, but church indulgences indeed.

The why is he pushing so-called “Personal Energy Ethics Pledge?” Why does he care if Gore signs one or not? Why, if he thinks it's important enough to bring up, does he not think it's important enough for him to sign.

I'm shocked, shocked to see a politician acting in a hypocritical manner.

So buying carbon credits is like buying indulgences?

Not really. My energy consumption at home is well above average, since I work from home.

Then again, about 90% of my work portfolio right now is alternative energy/biomass, so if you include the results of my work activity, my overall impact on CO2 emissions makes up for Gore's slack and a few thousand other people's as well.

Carbon offsets are ultimately the only way to go. Personal, residential type activity isn't a big deal. That "do your part to conserve" **** is nothing more than feel-goodism to make people "feel involved" just like turning in your copper pots and pans in WW2.

The real contributors to carbon emissions (not counting ag operations in the developing world, such as Amazon basic cow-clearing activities) is industrial and transportation sectors. Localized self-sustainability was pretty much done by the end of the 18th century in the US, except for the plantations down south, and we all know what drove that economy.

Incidentally, DD called your response an hour ago. Very predictable.
Carbon offsets are effectively whoring around with your own wife/GF by buying her little outfits and acting out fetish scenarios.

Carbon offsets are expensive, and the price is only going up, up, up, baby.

Unfortunately, a lot of the good early thinking and modeling of trading systems was obliterated on 9/11 when the majority of Cantor Fitzgerald was wiped out.

No, we can't all be below average. Think about the logic behind the pledge.

Also, as mentioned above, Gore does a lot more than the average American family from his home. Someone who works from home will obviously use more energy at home.

I made a "scavenger's guide to book making" in my sculpture class which was a guide to making a book out of natural and found materials, without any industrial processing required. Someone suggested that I follow it up by devising a way of delivering it to people. My first thought was a catapult.
Trebuchets have much better range, I think.
