  • They won't be, but I'm still very sceptical that this will get anything more than a cursory mention in the press...

    • I don't know what positive press she would hope to generate.

To be honest, I don't understand her motivation doing this. At best, it's a waste of her time.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      • To go along with my point that the press will ignore this, how many people actually know that Kerry visited Assad in Damascus a few months ago?

        • Kerry's been rogue negotiating since 1972. It's a pattern.

          • So the straits would be closed due to insurance.

Must say that I'm underwhelmed by this result.
I know, I scratched my head when I head this to. We can always force our own flaged vessels through, as I would imagine any nation not wanting their economy to crash would also do.

She's trying to get an Admin that (at least until very recently) doesn't believe in the idea of diplomacy, to engage in it with a state that plays a fairly prominent role wrt our foreign policy needs. To engineer such pressure, it's helpful to discuss these needs with said state.

And at worst, it's what? Maybe you could provide an objection to the meeting that makes any sense whatsoever.

              • I don't understand right wingers whose panties get in a twist from the idea of formal diplomatic relations with Syria, while Dear Leader's "renditions" to the very same country are nothing to get excited about...

                • I don't really care. Let her go. It's not as if she has the power to actually negotiate anything. It'll have as much impact as Kerry's visit.

Or a potential Rice visit, for that matter. They send her off on a globe-trotting vacation without the power (or inclination) to do anything. It's kind of pathetic...
