  • John Edwards not running?

    From the NYT:

John Edwards, the North Carolina Democrat making a second bid for the presidency, announced late Wednesday night that he would hold a news conference Thursday, a day after he and his wife, Elizabeth, visited Mrs. Edwards' doctor to assess her health following her recovery from breast cancer.
However, he has not specified what the press conference will be on, so it is unlikely that it is good news. I have seen speculation that there are four possibilities:

    What does this mean?

    1. That everything is okay. Unlikely. You don't announce a press conference with your wife, and not tell the details in advance, if it's the good news that her doctor's appointment went well.

    2. That Edwards is dropping out of the race and that his wife is seriously ill. Obviously we don't know, and I don't like speculating about someone's health like this. But this seems the most likely possibility at this point.

    3. That Edwards is taking a break from campaigning to tend to his wife. This is also possible, but geez, that's still not good news for his campaign or for his family of course.

    4. And finally, it's possible that Elizabeth Edwards' cancer is back, but that John Edwards is trying to decide what to do. He may actually not have decided, and is perhaps giving it until tomorrow to decide. That would explain announcing the press conference, but also explain why the vagueness

If he's dropping out, it may be because he's seen the writing on the wall and realizes that he can't compete money-wise with Clinton and Obama.

This doesn't seem to be a Warner-like drop out. His wife schedules a medical exam on Wednesday. He cancels campaign events to return to his hometown, and immediately after the exam announces a press conference, but refuses to say on what. This all feels very sudden.

It's tough to know. Guess we'll just have to wait. By no means has Edwards built up any momentum the last couple of weeks in order to make a splashy announcement that he's running. He's been Mr. Invisible.

He already made that announcement, Dan. Obama stole his place as the empty vessel people can fill with whatever they want to anyway.

Didn't know that. Thought he was announcing. Or reannouncing. You can never have too many announcements.

Yeah, he used the city of New Orleans as a stage prop for his announcement.

Oh, yeah. I remember that. That one was flat, flat, flat. Which of his genius advisors decided to tar him with New Orleans?

To be fair, its hard for any rational person to not be anti Bill Donohue.

                            Hot off the press...

WASHINGTON - Democrat John Edwards is suspending his campaign for the presidency due and may drop out completely because his wife has suffered a recurrence of cancer, sources said Thursday.

A prominent Iowa Democrat told Norah O’Donnell of NBC News that Edwards’ campaign has begun calling supporters in Iowa and telling them that he will suspend his presidential bid and started cancelling upcoming events in Iowa.
