I Have A Question About A Geico Caveman Commercial

In this commercial, the Caveman is talking to his shrink about how the depiction is demeaning to him.

His cell phone rings and he says, "It's probably my mother. I'll put it on speaker."
Why would he do that? Why would he put the call on speaker?

I've wondered that, too. My guess is that it's either a stupid thing to do, or some cultural reference I don't get.

Yes. His problems all stem back to an overbearing mother. The joke is that all his sessions revolve around her. A Niles Crane zinger.
