  • I think some of my teammates are taking this too seriously

We've got a graduate physics student intramural flag football team going. I just received our defensive playbook. It's 20 pages long.

Some people really have too much time on their hand... Who could possibly write 20 pages about something inane like that?

I'm sorry, did the liberal arts schmucks just discuss writing about useless stuff?

playbook is still a playbook.. it's what you do, it's your manual. Playbooks can make it or break it.

20 pages worth of playbook on defense for some sport is better than 20 pages of wondering how communism could work. Why? Because the other one is realistic.

When would you not just man up on D? Would zones and blitzes work in flag football?

Zones can work. If you have slow people on your defence man to man won't work for you.

Yes. This flag football has weird rules. There's no count before rush. To protect the QB you have to "block" without contact. You basically set screens. The defending player cannot initiate contact either, so if you're on the OL it's just a question of keeping yourself between the defenders and your QB. An unexpected blitz can really work well in this situation, but it needs a zone in case the QB manages to get a ball in the air.

Right now we have 4 different basic zones, each of which has 3 variants: no blitz, 1 man blitz, 2 man blitz, and any of those blitzes can be performed by different combinations of defenders.

We can also fall back on man coverage if the zone/blitz combo isn't working.

Actually, it sounds a lot like basketball's contact rules.

So the teams in this league actually have plays - they don't just say "hey, let's run left" or "go run a fly - you run a hook?" That... seems like it runs counter to the intramural aspect. You guys are trying too hard.

im pleased to see that kh rises above the competitive aspect to appraise the silliness of it.

Personally, I'm not going to blitz too much. I'm going to play in one of the pseudo-cornerback positions because I have good instincts for that...
