  • Help please : Newspaper advice needed.

Someone I know seeks assistance as follows.

I need your advice on the following. I need the Guardian equivalent (slightly left-leaning quality newspapers) for the following countries:

Australia, Brazil, India, South Africa, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal. I’m more interested in suggestions regarding the non-European markets.

Any suggestions on magazines reaching a similar audience (UK equivalent New Statesman) would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, people.

"Slightly left leaning quality newpaper" is a description for the Guardian?

Yeah, what it means is 'broadsheet' rather than tabloid. The Guardian actually has by far the best website of all the UK papers, despite having a rather one-eyed editorial line. But that's the same as most papers, really.

Bump. Why can you not find a Candian on 'Poly when you need one?

Or a Frenchman, German or Italian come to that.

Yeah alright. Try the Toronto Star. Don't know about quality but definitely left leaning (by Cdn standards).

The most prominent left wing paper here in Krautland is the "Tageszeitung" (TAZ). But I'm not sure that's the kind of newspaper you're after, I haven't looked at a "real" one for ages, and I their site looks dumb:

Kritischer, unabhängiger Journalismus der linken Nachrichtenseite taz: Analysen, Hintergründe, Kommentare, Interviews, Reportagen. Genossenschaft seit 1992.

                            Maybe this: Die Zeit http://www.zeit.de/

IIRC center-left, good reputation, but the print edition is weekly, not a daily newspaper.

"Der Spiegel" was once renowned as a left liberal weekly and would fit well in your "slightly left wing" description. But times change, meanwhile it descended into a pretty bad and at times shady center-right rag ("Bild am Montag").

The "taz" is borderline and at times pretty provocative. A pretty much radical left wing daily is "Junge Welt". I frankly don't know a "slightly left" daily newspaper in Germany. The big papers like "Die Welt", "Frankfurter Allgemeine" and "Süddeutsche Zeitung" are all pretty much center-right.
