  • High-Altitude Wind Power

    This is just COOL!

I read about this in today's WaPo. It sounds sensible to me, though I do wonder if there'd be any consequences to taking that much energy out of the upper atmosphere. One percent of all the energy up there is supposedly enough to power all of human civilization, but one percent might make a big difference in complex systems. Weather is unpredictable as it is, verdad? I'm talking out my arse here, so if you know something about these things do jump in.

For those who can't be asked to click the link, it's about the invention of a flying power plant attached to the ground by a power cable. It seems the winds in the upper atmosphere are far more strong and consistent than winds down near the surface, so such a plant can easily keep itself aloft and still generate plenty of surplus power. Even if you're a global-warming skeptic, the potential here is incredible, frees us from looking for fossil fuels, and it would be cheaper than coal without polluting at all.

    I'd imagine maintenance would be a *****.

I'd imagine that, as this plan involves clusters of tiny generators, you could just have the generator you want to work on lower itself down to earth individually so you can work on it. Stagger the maintenance schedule properly and you'd have a steady flow of power, barring a major catastrophe. 'Course, if it crashed it'd be dangerous, but that's why they're building it out in the desert for starters.

EDIT: "Tiny" is the wrong word, they're normal sized turbines with flying apparatus attached. Independent generators, I mean. They're talking about a network of 600, not a single giant generator. I honestly don't know where "tiny" came from.

Wind turbines in hurricane prone regions would be a better idea.

Why the hell not! Let's produce power just when demand is at its lowest.

Sky WindPower estimates the craft will produce 200 kilowatts per hour of electricity in an area that at ground level would produce none because of a lack of wind

Who said anything about 200 kWh?

200kWh is around 0.0004% of UK's energy use

UK's energy use...per year? Day? Hour?
