That's the kind of stuff the Berz does constantly, Most of us ignore it now. In this case (as it usually is) it's over the top, so no point in trying to talk anysense into him.

There are lots of drug addicts that "function"

Especially in Alcoholism you find many people who have to have a certain alcohol level during the day, but are able to work and do their duties with this alcohol level (but aren´t able to perform their duties without the alcohol).
Addiction only means that your brain/nervous system has adapted to the a certain level of the drug (and the byproducts created by the use of the drug (neurotransmitters for example)) and that you cannot function normally without the drug.
Addiction doesn´t mean that your life only revolves around gthe drug (especially if you always have a supply of the drug available and therefore are able to keep your drug levels up).
Of course addiction will also worsen over time due to adaptive processes within the nervous system, but this can be a long process.

An addict that is still able to keep his job is addicted just as a junkie selling his body for money just to get the next fix.

Rush can't be a drug addict because he is a Republican. Only liberals can be addicts becuase they are lazy sissies.

not always. Especially Alcoholoics and drug addicts that "mix" the two. couple this with late night parties on worknights, peer pressure, and possible mental illness... equals QUITE a disaster. I also knew LOTS of drug addicts that DIDNT function so well. Most of the time an addict will GIVE IN to his cravings, even if he holds a steady job. managing the two if quite difficult if not impossible for the hardcore junkies.

Addiction doesn´t mean that your life only revolves around gthe drug (especially if you always have a supply of the drug available and therefore are able to keep your drug levels up).

this worsens when a junkie DOSENT have a steady supply available, and he will begin to "WIG OUT" or fiend, or fixx, or whatever term you want to use. this can lead to depression, violence, or even crime. Friends and family WILL know the difference sooner or later... not to mention employers...

Of course addiction will also worsen over time due to adaptive processes within the nervous system, but this can be a long process.

An addict that is still able to keep his job is addicted just as a junkie selling his body for money just to get the next fix.

Again we speak of "moderation"? Most addicts are far from moderate and some are even severe hardcore users. their WHOLE LIFE revolves around the drugs and alcohol... YES they MAY be able to keep their job, but most users are so strung out half the time... that they are slack, lazy, and slumming around work just thinking about their craving. some even sneak some in between lunch breaks, some just call in sick. this is a more common problem that one might think...

Im just speaking about hardcore users of course, not light "some of the time" users... but an addict to me is just that... ADDICTED and DEPENDANT on the drug in question. and leads QUITE a diffucult life to be sure.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
