  • "Pressurize" ?????

Here in the last best hope of mankind, the word pressurize usually means something you do to a chamber, with gases.

If one applie pressure to an individual or institution to do something, we say "The world community pressured Ethiopia to make a deal with Eritrea"

We do NOT say "The world community pressurized Ethiopia to make a deal with Eritrea"

Pressurizing Ethiopia would be a sci fi kind of thing ("more helium on Addis Abbaba")

Yet it seems that many english speakers do use "pressurize" that way. I think mainly in former UK colonies in asia and africa, but Im not sure its limited to that.

Do you use pressurize that way? Is it used that way where you live? What do you think?

I can honestly say I never used the word pressurized. Pressurised maybe, but never pressurized.

I think I asked in the midst of another thread, and it was never answered.

Note, Pressurised OR Pressurized. I dont care about the spelling, thank you very much.

It's a logically applicable extension for increasing pressure. I don't use it in that way, but I don't think it's necessarily wrong.

To my ears it sounds totally illiterate.

It has to be used correctly for it to sound 'right' to me.

                      The crowd pressured the politician.

The situation pressurised as the crowd got more vocal.

I use the word "faire pression" about people. I use the word "pressuriser" about rooms.

I can mistakenly use "pressurize" in English, but maybe I won't anymore, thanks to this thread
